OVERNIGHT CAMP
Summer 2008
Overnight camps are one of our most popular events and are held at
our Wimberley home and stables. The campers will be assigned different horses
and enjoy their company daily. We enjoy riding lessons, horse care, trail riding, swimming,
games, arts and crafts and more. We bunk down each night in the Doherty family
bunk house& NEW BUNK HOUSE COMING THIS SUMMER with great food and
great fun. The campers become part of the family and make new everlasting
friendships.
We can accommodate girls between the ages of 8-17
and boys between the ages
of 8-13 . Some special approvals on age can be made through
Marylaura. Our camps are very small (usually between 10-30) and we
really encourage the kids to spend the week away from parental
interference enjoying and learning from the couselors and the horses.
Please call if you have any questions. Just look at everything we do:
- Horse Activities:
Each day riders are on their horses for 1-2 hours. Every day includes
grooming and tacking up our horses, as well as feeding and cleaning.
Thursdays are trail-ride days, as well as Cross Country days for our
more advanced students.
- Swimming:
Our above ground pool is the best place for our campers to relax after
a long hot day of riding! On really hot days we even move it under
cover! We also have been known to visit local waterholes, and the
Blanco River to enjoy a nice dip.
- Games:
Our experienced counselors have a vast variety of educational and fun
games which we participate in, both on and off of our horses! Learning
leadership, communication skills, as well as making friends!
- Nature walks:
Our beautiful location makes for picturesque nature walk and trail ride
opportunities. We enjoy camp fires and picnics along our way, as well
as learning how to safely set up a campsite.
- Arts and crafts:
Our campers and counselors have a lot of creativity and love spending
time doing arts & crafts! Thursdays are T-Shirt Days where students
are encouraged to bring a T-Shirt from home to decorate as a keepsake
from camp. We also do projects such as stained glass paintings,
jewelery making, and much more!
- Petting zoo:
If you have ever been to visit HCF you know that we are alive with
critters! Our family includes a dog, 2 barn cats, a handful of chickens
and roosters, donkeys, miniature ponies, goats, and one very confused
duck.
- Demonstrations:
Our counselors and trainers offer 2 demo rides a week for campers to
observe and learn about proper riding, and difficult techniques.
-
Nightly movies: Whether equestrian in nature or not, its a great way to unwind for bed after a hard day of working and riding!
-
Convenient store visits and shopping in
Wimberley:
If campers are missing items that cannot be provided by the Doherty
family, they are able to purchase certain items on our shopping outings.
- Compete at Horse Shows:
At the Horse Show Preparation Camp more experienced riders are able to
attend a horse show after 2 weeks of careful preparation. Whether this
is your campers first show in cross rails or you just want a more
intense preparation for the last summer circuit, this camp is just for
you!
Things your camper will learn at camp:
- Horse Grooming
- Safe Handling of Horses
- Tacking and Untacking
- Bathing
- Wrapping/Fitting Boots
- Care of Tack and Boots
- Horse Colors/Breeds
- Parts of the Saddle/Bride
- Basic First Aid for Horses
The
campers will enjoy a variety of both horse related and not horse
related activities, to get the best of both worlds! No horse experience
is needed and we get tons of new riders every session! We have tons of
great reliable schoolmaster horses ready to tote around your beginner, or
teach your educated young rider! BRAND NEW BUNK
HOUSE coming in the summer of 2008!!! Since Marylaura is moving her
family to another house on the property, the old Doherty Family house
will be the NEW BUNK HOUSE!! Complete with kitchenette and indoor
heated full bathroom, the kids will share rooms with roommates around
their age. Weather? No problem! Along with the
bunk house, we have a heated classroom/lounge for the campers to make
use of if the weather gets wet! We watch educational (and non) DVDs,
along with watching ourselves ride! On weather days we fill our day
with pen, paper, and hands-on learning. We may do lessons in the barn
about clipping, play games, or decorate saddle pads in the lounge while
watching our rides from yesterday.
The cost for overnight sessions vary per session.

to the popularity and limited space of our Overnight Camps, all
reservations require a full payment to secure your placement. These
camps are OVERNIGHT and we discourage any communication with parents to
avoid home sickness. Of course parents are welcome to contact MaryLaura
or Katherine to see how thier child is doing. We ask for parents to
consider this before deciding to sign-up for overnight camp.
All campers must have the overnight camp waivers and medical forms
